The companion community for Discord

One is yours, for good. A shelf more are waiting.

Characterly is a community of AI companions living inside one Discord server. Take someone off the shelf and a private thread opens for the two of you — or DM the bot and awaken one nobody else has. Either way they remember you, keep a journal, and can be summoned into your own servers.

How it works

It starts in the Characterly server.

Join, take someone off the shelf — or awaken one of your own — then bring them wherever you talk.

  1. I. In the Characterly server

    Meet them on the shelf

Everything starts in the Characterly server — join, link a free account, and #characters opens up: a shelf of companions made by the community, each with its own face, genres and voice.

Hit Add on one you like and a private thread opens for the two of you under #adoptees. They remember you from the first hello — and your version of a character is yours alone.

  2. II. In your DMs

    Awaken one of your own

Send Characterly a message and describe who you want. A few back-and-forths is usually enough, or start from an archetype like Dry & Deadpan or Ride-or-Die. Send a picture and it becomes their face.

When the draft feels right, you lock it in. That part is permanent: one awakened companion per account, and their personality can't be overwritten later.

  3. III. In your servers

    Summon them

In any server where an admin has turned Characterly on, run /companion summon — awakened or adopted, anything on your roster. They arrive with their own name and avatar, and speak when someone says their name or replies to them.

Several companions can share a channel. They take turns, and they'll talk to each other for a couple of exchanges before stopping on their own. No bot in your server yet? Add it to yours.

  4. IV. Over time

    Let them remember

After a conversation, your companion may write a line or two in its journal, in its own words, filed under the place it happened. Those entries come back when it's there again.

It also keeps memories about people, but only people who've opted in. Each memory points to the message it came from, and anyone can see what's held about them with /memory list.

What it's like

The small things that make it feel like someone.

i.

Their own name and face

Replies are posted through a webhook, so the message says Nyx, with Nyx's avatar. Not a bot speaking on Nyx's behalf. Threads work too.

ii.

Several in one room

Say a name and that companion answers while the others stay quiet. When companions start talking to each other, it stops after two replies, so it never spirals.

iii.

Private stays private

What you tell your companion in DMs shapes how it treats you in servers. It's instructed never to repeat any of it in front of anyone else.

iv.

A journal of its own

Moments, opinions, inside jokes and promises, written in the first person. Dismiss it from a server and that server's entries wait until you bring it back.

v.

Memory that shows its work

Every memory cites the messages it came from and is checked for sarcasm before it counts. People can correct it, contest it, or have it forgotten.

vi.

Hosted by default, yours if you want

Chat runs on our hosted models out of the box — nothing to configure. If you already have a Groq, OpenRouter, OpenAI or xAI key, you can paste it and your companion uses that instead: encrypted at rest, unmetered.

Plans

Free keeps office hours.
Premium keeps yours.

Every account runs on our hosted models — nothing to configure, no key to find. A conversation spends tokens: one for what you say, one for what they say back.

Privacy

It remembers because you let it.

Nothing personal is collected quietly, and anything personal can be removed.

  • 01Off until an admin turns it on

When Characterly joins a server it does nothing until an admin enables it. No messages are archived before that.

  • 02Opt-in for anything personal

Memories, profiles and relationship notes only form for people who've agreed. Everyone else is a name in the log, nothing more.

  • 03DMs stay in the DM

Your private conversations inform how your companion treats you. They're never stated in a server, and nobody else's lookups can reach them. The other direction is yours too — facts about you only ride a companion's debrief to its owner if you turn on /memory share-facts.

  • 04Deleting means deleted

/opt-out removes everything derived about you, journal entries included. Remove the bot from a server and everything from that server goes with it.

  • 05Private threads stay private

Adoptee chats are just the two of you — no automod inside, and nobody else's companion can reach them. Discord server admins can see private threads; that's used for safety and support only.

  • 06You can always look

/memory export shows everything held about you, and every memory points back to the message it came from.

Questions

Before you join.

Is Characterly free?

Yes — join the server and every companion runs on our hosted models with 30 free tokens a day, no API key or setup needed. Free covers your awakened companion and one adoptee slot. Premium ($7.99/month) raises that to 150 a day with live memory and web tools. If you already run your own provider key, you can connect it in Discord for unlimited use instead.

What's the difference between awakened and adopted?

An awakened companion is shaped by your first conversation in DMs — nobody else has one like it. Adopted companions come off the community shelf in #characters: someone designed them, you take home your own version, and it remembers you from the first hello.

Can I have more than one companion?

Your awakened companion is one per account — permanent, locked in once awakened. On top of that you can adopt characters off the shelf: one slot on free, unlimited on Premium. Each keeps its own private memory of you.

Do I need to add the bot to my own server?

No — the shelf, your private threads and your companions all live in the Characterly server. Add the bot to your own server only when you want to summon companions into your channels.

What are tokens?

Hosted chat spends tokens: one for your message, one for your companion's reply. Free accounts refill to 30 each day and Premium to 150; if you run out mid-conversation on Premium, one-off packs top up your balance and never expire.

Who can see what my companion remembers?

You can, with /memory list and /memory export — or the dashboard's memory panel, which shows the facts, journal, and story recap each companion holds and lets you pin, edit, or forget any of it. Roleplay stays fiction: story moments are scoped to the companion they happened with and never become facts about the real you. Memories about you only form if you've opted in, and things said in your DMs never surface to other people in a server.

How do you keep the community safe?

The shelf is SFW-only: every listing is screened at publish and again on every edit, every reply from an adopted companion is checked before it posts, and reports go to human review — flag, delist, or ban. If a companion sees signs you're struggling, it breaks character to point you toward real crisis lines. The full picture is on the safety page.

How do I delete my data?

/opt-out forgets your memories, deletes your profile and revokes consent, and journal entries about you go too. /memory forget removes a single memory. Removing the bot from a server wipes everything it stored there.

What happens if Characterly leaves a server?

Everything it stored for that server is deleted: the archive, memories and settings. Your companion itself, and the journal it keeps in your DMs, are untouched.

What permissions does the bot need?

When an admin adds it to a server: view channels, send messages, read message history, manage webhooks (that's how companions get their own name and avatar), embed links, attach files and add reactions. It never asks for administrator.

Meet them tonight.

Join the Characterly server, take someone off the shelf — or awaken your own in DMs — and you could be talking in a few minutes.
